Husbands and Fathers

I was reading the comments on a pro-life video. While many of the remarks were disagreeable and unkind, a trend did emerge. The ideal of the "Pro-Choice Man" was a described as a man who is supportive of the "Pro-Choice Woman" and her decision to terminate her pregnancy.

I found this idea problematic because it illustrates a darker trend in our society, and that is a man is not allowed to hope and dream. A man is not allowed to have feelings, longings, and aspirations. A man is not allowed to step outside of the daily grind and desire something more. A man is merely a slave to his circumstances.

Man is created in the image and likeness of God. Man is made for the very higher thought society seeks to snuff out. A man of God cannot be controlled by a government or earthly power. That is why so many are martyred. Man is made for God.

The ideal of a "Man" is a man who loves kids, who loves his wife, who lays down his life every day to enter into the daily grind because he knows his family is with him in spirit, praying for him, loving him, and waiting for him on the other side.

Men are called to greatness, and much of it is through great amounts of adversity. Men are tempered in fire. Men hold their suffering close to the vest because they want to see their wives and children smile rather than fret of them. Men gather up their families to stand together in God's light.

Those who live according to the flesh fix their attention on the things of the flesh, while those who live according to the Spirit set their thoughts on spiritual things... Those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery leading to fear; rather, you received a Spirit of adoption, enabling us to cry out, "Abba! Father!" Romans 8: 5, 14-15
