Baptism is an amazing thing. Infant Baptism washes away original sin and preserves a state of innocence until the age of reason, having full knowledge of right and wrong. Adult Baptism washes away original sin as well as all of the sins of one's whole life up to that very moment. Wow! What an amazing gift! What an amazing God!
In the Catholic Church, the age of reason is seven. At seven a child is mature enough to understand right from wrong and to know, love, and serve God and to love their neighbor as themself. Yesterday, my little girl celebrated the seventh anniversary of her Baptism. Today, she will celebrate her First Confession. As sin goes, she is past her freshness date.
I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I am. ... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matt: 3: 11
