Because God Loved Me First

G. K. Chesterton once said, "A thing must be loved before it is loveable."

I have been sitting with that quote this morning. It reminds me of another quote, "Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God... God's love was revealed to us in this way: God sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might have life through Him. This is what love is: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as expiation for our sins." 1 John 4: 7, 8-10

I am the thing that is loved by God, making me loveable to my parents, my husband, my children, and my friends. Love begins with God.

When I feel anything but loved, it is a lie. When I believe that I have done something so terrible, that even Confession cannot help me, it is a lie. When I feel unworthy of the love poured out for me, it is a lie. God created me in love. He poured out every drop of His Precious blood for me, and then He gave me His Sacred Heart. Nothing can change that. I, in my finite imperfections, cannot do anything in this life that could separate me from His Love.

That is, unless I believe the lies of the world. I could believe there is no sunrise if I look westward at dawn. I could believe there is no sunset if I look eastward at dusk. It does not make it true. It merely prevents me from accepting a gift offered in love.

God never changes.
